Today’s blog post is dedicated to my best advice before your senior portrait session. Let’s jump in!
As a Chicagoland senior photographer, I know firsthand how important your senior photos are. These photos capture a milestone moment in your life — a memory you’ll hold onto forever. So how can you make sure your session is everything you’ve dreamed of? Here’s the number one thing I tell every senior before their photos… Practice your facial expressions in the mirror!
Why Mirror Practice Isn’t Extra
It may feel a bit silly at first, but practicing your facial expressions in the mirror before your shoot is incredibly valuable. It helps you get comfortable with your expressions, which means when it’s time to step in front of the camera, you’ll feel more confident and relaxed. Plus, it’s not just helpful for photos with your senior photographer — it’s also a fantastic trick to use when taking selfies with your friends. Try out different expressions, smiles, and poses to discover what feels most like “you.” Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later!
What Really Makes a Great Senior Portrait
After more than a decade photographing seniors, I’ve learned that the true magic of a photo lies in genuine happiness. The outfits, locations, and poses are all fantastic, but the real standout in any shot is you — your unique personality shining through. When you feel comfortable and confident, that joy radiates in the photos, making your photos authentically you.
My Promise as Your Senior Photographer
For me, every senior session is special. I treat each one with care and attention because I truly want my clients to feel comfortable, seen, and appreciated. Part of this comes from getting to know you so I can bring out your best qualities in every shot. I believe that everyone has a unique beauty within them, just waiting to be captured! My job is to bring that out in a way that feels true to you!!
To my fellow photographers, here’s my best advice: Be kind, take the time to appreciate each client, and make them feel valued. When you approach each session with this mindset, it transforms both your work and your clients’ experience.
So if you’re preparing for your senior session, take this advice to heart. Practice those expressions, come with a positive attitude, and trust your photographer to capture the best version of YOU in this season of life!!
