Slow season is the perfect time to pause, plan, and get ready for a senior year photoshoot that truly reflects YOU. Even though the cold weather might make you want to hibernate, there are a few things you can do now for senior session prep that will set the tone for a stress-free, amazing session when the warmer months roll around.
I know January in Chicagoland can feel like the middle of hibernation season, but this slow season is actually the perfect time to start thinking ahead about your senior photos. Your senior year is a milestone you’ll want to remember forever, and a little prep now goes a long way in making your session smooth, fun, and totally YOU.

Here are a few things you can do this month to set yourself up for senior session success:
1) Start brainstorming your style.
Think about the look and feel you want for your photos. Are you more laid-back and casual, or are you dreaming of a dramatic, bold vibe? Pinterest boards, TikTok inspo, or even scrolling through my past senior galleries can help you narrow down what speaks to YOU.
2) Plan your outfits (and accessories!).
Even if the session is a few months away, now is the perfect time to start planning. Think layers, textures, and colors that complement you and your locations. Accessories like hats, scarves, or your favorite jacket can really make your photos pop.
3) Think about locations.
Do you want an outdoor park vibe, an urban downtown backdrop, or something more sentimental like your favorite coffee shop? January is perfect for dreaming and making a list of locations that feel meaningful to you.
4) Start a hair and skin routine.
It may sound simple, but the little things make a big difference. Drinking water, moisturizing, and keeping up with any hair or skincare routines now ensures you’ll feel confident and ready on session day.
5) Book early (and breathe!).
Slow season is a great time to lock in your preferred date for spring or summer sessions before schedules fill up. Once your session is on the calendar, you can relax knowing this important milestone is already taken care of.

Even though it’s chilly outside, January is all about preparation. A little planning now means a smooth, stress-free, and fun senior session when the sun is shining and the leaves (or flowers) are popping. Trust me, future you will thank yourself!
