Here at Sarah Jane Photography, I believe a confident and joyful photo experience starts before I ever click the shutter. And one of the biggest secrets to happy clients? Setting clear expectations from the very beginning – especially when it comes to the process and pricing.
Let’s talk about it.
I know that “money talk” can sometimes feel awkward – but here’s the truth: when your clients know exactly what to expect (and what it costs), they feel confident, relaxed, and excited for their experience. That’s what we want!
So whether you’re one of my amazing SJP seniors or a fellow photographer looking to refine your client process, here are the key ways I ensure everything runs smoothly:
Step 1: Know Your Numbers
Before I ever talk pricing with clients, I make sure I know my numbers inside and out. Understanding my costs, my time, and the value I bring helps me confidently explain why I charge what I do. And when you believe in the value of your work, clients will too.
Step 2: Be Upfront From the Start
I never want my clients to feel surprised. That’s why I include pricing details and an outline of my process in the first inquiry response, on my website, and in my welcome materials. Transparency is the foundation of trust!
Step 3: Repeat, Repeat, Repeat
Once a session is booked, I follow up with a clear “what’s next” email. This includes a refresher on how the experience flows – from the session day to the ordering appointment. Then, right before the session, clients get another prep email (what to wear, what to bring, how to feel confident) and a reminder of what happens after the shoot.
Why so many touch points? Because the more clients hear it, the more prepared and at ease they’ll feel.
Step 4: Be Confident Talking About Pricing
If you’re unsure when talking about pricing, clients will sense it. So whether it’s a fellow photographer reading this or a senior parent wondering how to talk about investment, here’s my advice: own your value. My work is personal, intentional, and focused on creating heirloom-quality art – and I’m proud of the experience I deliver.
Because here’s what I know: When clients feel informed, they feel confident investing. And confident clients? They’re the ones who leave glowing reviews, refer their friends, and treasure their portraits forever.
So if you’re a 2025 senior (or parent!) starting to plan your session, know this – I’ll be with you every step of the way. From our first conversation to the moment you unwrap your final images, I’m here to make sure you feel taken care of and totally confident in the process.
And to my fellow photographers: take a peek at your own workflow this week. Is there a spot where you could be a little clearer? A place to ease client concerns before they even arise? Even one small update can transform your client experience!
