The Magic of Word-of-Mouth Referrals in your Photography Business

The magic of word-of-mouth referrals in your photography business – Sarah Jane Photography is a senior photographer based in Bourbonnais, IL.

One of the best parts of being a senior photographer in Chicagoland? Getting to create an unforgettable experience for my clients, and watching that experience turn into lasting connections, glowing reviews, and even more dream clients through referrals.

Let’s be honest: in a world full of photographers, referrals are gold. If you’re a fellow senior photographer, hear me out – your past clients are your best marketing tool. When a senior (or their mom!) has a session that blows them away, they tell everyone. That kind of word-of-mouth magic? You can’t buy it.

And here’s the best part – it’s not just luck. You can actually create a referral-friendly experience on purpose. Here’s how I turn seniors into raving fans who help grow my business year after year:

From the first email to the final gallery, your process matters. Keep it seamless, fun, and totally stress-free. When your seniors feel supported and like the star of the show, they leave feeling confident, seen, and excited to share their experience.

2) Give Them Something to Share

Sneak peeks are a game-changer. Whether it’s a single image, a short reel, or behind-the-scenes content, give your clients something they can post and tag you in. It keeps the hype going and gets your name in front of their friends.

3) Incentivize Referrals

Sometimes all it takes is a little nudge! Offer a simple referral bonus – maybe a print credit, a discount on future sessions, or a fun surprise. Keep it easy and exciting.

4) Ask – and Make It Easy

Don’t be afraid to send a quick follow-up that says, “I loved working with you! If you know someone looking for senior photos, I’d be so grateful for your referral.” Include a direct booking link or even a quick image they can forward.

5) Feature Your Past Clients

This is one of my favorite ways to celebrate the amazing seniors I work with. Share their session highlights on Instagram, shout them out in blog posts, or spotlight them in your stories. When people feel appreciated, they want to spread the love.

At Sarah Jane Photography, my Mod Squad (aka my Senior Rep Team) has been a huge part of this word-of-mouth success. These incredible girls help create buzz around the experience, and their friends often become future clients. Want to see more? Photographer friends – here’s your challenge:

Pick one referral strategy and try it out this week! Whether it’s a client shoutout, a small thank-you gift, or a personal message to a past client, you might be surprised how quickly the buzz starts to grow.

Let’s keep showing up, doing great work, and building businesses we’re proud of. You’ve got this!
