10 Mistakes High School Seniors Make Before Their Senior Photos

10 Mistakes High School Seniors Make Before Their Senior Photos – Sarah Jane Photography is a Chicagoland senior photographer.

Today, we’re talking about 10 mistakes seniors make before their senior photos. And I promise it’s a good one!

Your senior photos are supposed to be fun! But if you’ve never had professional portraits taken before, it can be easy to feel a little overwhelmed by everything that goes into getting ready. What should you wear? What should you bring? Should you get your hair and makeup done? What happens if you don’t know how to pose?

The good news? You don’t have to figure it all out on your own! At Sarah Jane Photography, I help my seniors plan everything from outfits and accessories to locations, hair, makeup, and posing. A little preparation goes a long way, and avoiding a few common senior photo mistakes can make your session day feel so much more relaxed and enjoyable.

Here are 10 mistakes seniors make before their senior photos and, more importantly, how to avoid them!

  1. Waiting Until the Last Minute to Book Your Session

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is waiting too long to get your senior photos on the calendar. Senior year gets BUSY. Between school, sports, activities, college visits, work, friends, and everything else happening during this season of life, your calendar can fill up quickly. That is especially true here in the Midwest, where summer and fall are popular times for senior portraits and those favorite dates can book months in advance.

If you already know that you want beautiful fall foliage, summer golden-hour light, or a specific location, start planning early. Think about what season best fits your style and what kind of backdrop you envision for your portraits, then talk with your photographer about availability. As I’ve said before on the SJP blog, the year flies by, and the last thing you want is to be scrambling because you waited too long to get your session on the books.

That said, don’t panic if you’re reading this and haven’t booked yet! There are beautiful options throughout the year, including spring sessions and even late-year senior portraits. There isn’t one “right” time to take your senior photos. The important thing is finding a date and season that works for you, your schedule, and the vision you have for your session.

  1. Trying to Figure Out Your Outfits the Night Before

Please don’t wait until the night before your senior session to decide what you’re going to wear! Choosing senior photo outfits can feel like a BIG task, especially if you’ve never planned outfits specifically for professional portraits. You want variety, you want to feel like yourself, and you want each look to photograph beautifully. There are colors to consider, accessories to coordinate, shoes to remember, and, of course, the question of what actually feels like YOU.

This is exactly why I include a style consult in the SJP senior portrait experience. A few weeks before your session, you can bring the clothes, shoes, jewelry, and accessories you’re considering into the studio, and we’ll work through everything together. We can even mix in pieces from the SJP Style Closet to complete your looks. We’ll talk through the overall vision, make sure you have variety, and put together outfits that work with your personality, locations, and the season of your session.

I love this part of the process because it takes the pressure off. Once we’ve chosen your outfits, we can take photos of everything we’ve put together so you know exactly what you’re wearing when session day arrives. No last-minute panic, no standing in front of your closet wondering what in the world you’re going to wear, and no need to buy an entirely new wardrobe just for your senior pictures. As I’ve shared before, planning ahead means you can arrive relaxed, prepared, and excited because you already know the whole vision.

  1. Forgetting the Little Details

You remembered your dress, you remembered your jeans, and you remembered your shoes… Right? One of the easiest mistakes to make is forgetting the little pieces that complete an outfit. Jewelry, shoes, belts, hair accessories, jackets, socks, and other details can completely change the finished look, so they deserve just as much attention as the main pieces of your outfit.

Once we decide on your outfits during your style consult, I recommend keeping each complete look together. Take photos of the outfits, including all of the accessories, and pack everything together the day before your session. That way, you aren’t trying to remember which shoes went with which outfit while you’re rushing out the door.

And guys, this one is especially important for you: don’t forget your socks! If you’re wearing dress pants, your socks can absolutely show when you sit down. Make sure they coordinate with your outfit instead of accidentally showing up in an old pair of athletic socks. It sounds like such a small detail, but those little details really do matter when you’re creating a complete portrait.

  1. Showing Up With Wrinkled Clothes

This one sounds small, but trust me, it matters! Wrinkles and creases can be distracting in photos and can take away from an otherwise amazing outfit. Don’t assume that your clothing will magically look better once you put it on. If anything, those wrinkles tend to become even more noticeable once you’re standing, sitting, moving, and posing in front of the camera.

Steam or iron your clothes before your session and hang them up so they stay looking their best. If you’re traveling to your session, be mindful of how you’re transporting your outfits, too. A garment bag can be your best friend, especially if you’re bringing several looks.

Your senior photos are something you’ll look back on for years, so let’s make sure your outfits are looking their best from the moment you step in front of the camera.

  1. Getting a Spray Tan Right Before Your Session

I know, I know… you want that beautiful summer glow. But please don’t experiment with a new spray tan right before your senior photos! A spray tan that turns out too dark, too orange, streaky, or uneven can be difficult to correct, and your senior session is not the time to test out a brand-new product or color.

If you regularly get spray tans and know exactly how your skin reacts, that’s one thing. But if you’ve never tried a particular product before, give yourself plenty of time to make sure you know how it will look on your skin. The same goes for trying a completely new skincare routine right before your session. Your safest bet is to stick with products and routines you already know work well for you and give your skin some time to be itself.

The goal isn’t to completely change how you look for your senior photos. It’s to look and feel like the best, most confident version of YOU.

  1. Making a Major Hair Change Right Before Your Photos

Thinking about chopping your hair, trying a dramatic new color, or experimenting with a completely different style? Maybe don’t do it the day before your senior session.

Your senior photos are about capturing YOU, so you absolutely should style your hair in a way that makes you feel confident. I just recommend avoiding major last-minute changes that you haven’t had time to get used to. If you’ve always wanted to try a new haircut or color, that’s great! Just give yourself some time to live with the change before stepping in front of the camera.

If you’re getting your hair professionally styled for your session, talk with your stylist beforehand about the looks you’re considering. You can even bring inspiration photos so you and your stylist are on the same page. Giving yourself a little extra time allows you to make sure you love the direction before you’re standing in front of my camera.

Remember, we’re trying to eliminate surprises on session day, not add more of them!

  1. Skipping Professional Hair and Makeup Because You’re Nervous About “Looking Too Done”

I hear this one a lot! Some seniors worry that professional hair and makeup will make them look like someone else, but that isn’t the goal at all. Professional hair and makeup should enhance your natural features and help you feel confident while still looking like yourself.

Makeup also photographs differently than it looks in person. A professional makeup artist understands how products, lighting, and the camera work together, which means they can apply the right amount of makeup so your features still look natural and beautiful in your portraits. They’re also trained to choose products and techniques that hold up throughout a session, which can be especially important during hot Midwest summer sessions.

And let’s be honest… getting pampered before your senior session is part of the fun! Your senior photos are a milestone, so why not make the day feel special from beginning to end? At SJP, I want the experience to feel like more than simply showing up and taking pictures. From hair and makeup to styling and all the little details, the goal is to make your senior session a day you actually enjoy.

  1. Forgetting to Eat, Drink Water, and Get Some Sleep

Senior sessions can be a workout! We’re moving around, walking between locations, changing outfits, posing, laughing, and sometimes spending quite a bit of time outside. The last thing you want is to show up exhausted, hungry, or dehydrated.

Get a good night’s sleep before your session and give yourself plenty of time to get ready so you’re not starting the day feeling rushed. Eat a meal or snack beforehand and bring water and snacks with you. I always recommend staying hydrated throughout the session, too, especially during those hot Midwest summer sessions when we’re spending time outside and moving from location to location.

Taking care of yourself beforehand can make a huge difference in your energy and how much you enjoy your session. The energy you bring with you really does impact the experience, so show up rested, fed, hydrated, and ready to have some fun. As I’ve said before, your senior session is all about YOU, so give yourself the opportunity to actually enjoy it!

  1. Trying to Copy Someone Else’s Senior Photos

Pinterest and Instagram can be SO much fun for inspiration. I genuinely love seeing the ideas my seniors bring to me, especially when those ideas help me understand their style and the kind of session they’re dreaming about.

But there is a difference between finding inspiration and trying to recreate someone else’s entire session. Your senior photos should feel like YOU. Maybe you love a particular location, pose, outfit, or creative idea you’ve seen online. Bring it to me! Let’s talk about how we can take that inspiration and make it fit your personality, style, interests, and story.

I’ve photographed seniors in urban locations, flower fields, sports settings, downtown spaces, studios, and all kinds of unique places. One of my favorite things about senior photography is the versatility. We can change outfits, locations, poses, and even the overall vibe throughout your session so your final gallery feels like a collection of images that genuinely represents you.

Remember my favorite SJP mantra: Be you. No one else can do it better! I don’t want to recreate someone else’s senior photos. I want to create photos that could only belong to you.

  1. Stressing About Posing Before You Even Arrive

This might be the BIGGEST one of all: you do not need to know how to pose for your senior photos. That’s my job!

I know getting in front of a professional camera can feel awkward at first. Most of my seniors aren’t professional models, and I don’t expect them to be. That’s why I guide you through the session from start to finish. I’ll give you direction for your hands, help you move naturally, make adjustments along the way, and show you what to do so you never feel like you’re standing there wondering, “Okay… now what?”

I love variety in senior sessions, too. We’ll mix up your poses, locations, outfits, angles, and movements so your final gallery doesn’t feel like 100 versions of the same photo. Some poses are tried-and-true SJP favorites, while others happen naturally as we move through your session and work with the environment around us. My goal is always to make you feel comfortable enough that your personality starts to come through naturally.

You don’t have to show up knowing what to do. You just have to show up ready to trust me, have some fun, and let your personality shine. As I’ve said before, posing is something I’ll guide you through every step of the way, and if something doesn’t feel comfortable or like you, we can adjust it.

The Best Way to Prepare for Your Senior Photos? Don’t Do It Alone!

If you’re reading this and thinking, “Okay, but now I’m even more overwhelmed,” take a deep breath! This is exactly why I believe your senior photography experience should include more than simply showing up with a few outfits and standing in front of a camera.

At Sarah Jane Photography, we start preparing long before your actual session date. We talk about your vision, outfits, accessories, locations, hair, makeup, and all the little details that help make your session feel like YOU. From our initial conversations to your style consult and all the planning in between, my goal is to make sure you know what to expect and feel confident heading into your session.

And when the camera comes out? I’ll guide you through the rest.

Senior photos aren’t just about having pretty pictures. They’re about documenting who you are during this specific season of your life. You’ll never be a high school senior again, and I want your images to capture the personality, style, interests, and confidence that make this version of you so special. That’s why I believe so strongly in creating portraits that feel authentic to each individual senior rather than trying to make everyone fit into the same mold. And that’s why I shared these 10 mistakes seniors make before their senior photos to help you prepare!

So don’t stress about getting everything perfect. Plan ahead, communicate your ideas, trust your photographer, and most importantly, have FUN! Your senior year only happens once, and your senior photos are one of the ways you’ll be able to look back on this season years from now.

Let’s make some memories and capture the magic along the way!
