Dream Big: How to Set Bold Goals for Your Photography Business

How to set bold goals for your photography business – Sarah Jane Photography is a senior photographer & educator based in Chicagoland.

How to set bold goals for your photography business… Sounds a bit daunting, right? Stick with me… When was the last time you sat down and really let yourself dream BIG about your photography business? Not just think about what you need to get done this week, but imagine what you want your business to look like a year from now, five years from now, or even further down the road!

Setting bold goals does more than give you direction. It fuels your creativity, keeps you motivated, and helps you build the business you’ve always envisioned. Whether you’re dreaming of booking your ideal clients, traveling for destination sessions, launching a new product, or taking your photography business to the next level, having a plan can make all the difference.

As photographers and creatives, we spend so much time pouring into our clients, creating beautiful work, and keeping up with the never-ending to-do list that we sometimes forget to pour into our own businesses. So today, I’m sharing my process for how to set bold goals for your photography business and actually making them happen!

  1. Dream Big, Then Dream Even Bigger!

First things first, give yourself permission to dream! Grab a notebook, open a fresh document, or pull out your favorite planning tool and start writing down everything you’d love to accomplish in your business. And I mean EVERYTHING!

Maybe you want to book your dream clients, photograph destination sessions, launch a new product line, grow your senior rep team, or finally create that educational resource you’ve been thinking about for months. Whatever it is, put it on paper. Don’t worry about whether it feels realistic just yet. This is your chance to dream without putting limitations on yourself!

Once you have your list, pick one goal that really excites you and ask yourself, “What’s the next level of this dream?”

I love this question because it challenges you to think beyond what feels comfortable or familiar. Sometimes we limit ourselves before we even give an idea a chance. What if you aimed a little higher? What if you gave yourself permission to build something bigger than what you originally imagined?

You never know what you’re capable of until you start exploring the possibilities!

  1. Break Those Big Goals Into Smaller Steps

Okay, now that we’ve done the dreaming, it’s time to make things happen! Big goals are exciting, but they can also feel completely overwhelming when you look at everything that needs to get done.

This is where breaking things down into smaller, manageable tasks becomes a game-changer.

For example, as I work on launching my next Mod Squad, I’ve broken the process down into what feels like 800 different steps. Yes, EIGHT HUNDRED! From planning and organizing to coordinating details and making sure everything is ready to go, there is a lot that goes into bringing a project like this to life. But instead of trying to tackle all 800 things at once, I break them into micro tasks and focus on completing one or two things each day. And guess what? That big, overwhelming project suddenly feels much more manageable. At one point, I was down to just four things left!

The same approach works for your photography business. If your goal is to book more of your ideal clients, start by identifying the smaller steps that will help you get there. Maybe you need to update your portfolio, improve your website, create a marketing plan, or reconnect with past clients. Each of those tasks moves you one step closer to your bigger goal.

Remember, you don’t have to accomplish everything today. Consistent progress adds up, and those little steps can lead to some pretty amazing things!

  1. Set Deadlines and Hold Yourself Accountable

Here’s something I’ve learned over the years: a goal without a timeline can easily turn into a someday project. You know the ones I’m talking about! Those ideas that stay on your to-do list for months because there’s always something else that feels more urgent.

The solution? Give your goals deadlines.

Start with the end goal and work backward. When do you want to accomplish it? What needs to happen one month before that? What about two weeks before? Then, assign realistic deadlines to the smaller tasks along the way.

Let’s say you want to launch a new photography offering before the busy season. You might set a deadline for finalizing your pricing, another for updating your website, and another for announcing the new offering to your audience. Instead of scrambling to pull everything together at the last minute, you have a plan to follow.

And here’s the important part: be realistic with yourself! Your photography business has a lot of moving pieces, especially during busy season. Give yourself enough time to do things well without creating unnecessary stress.

Deadlines help you stay focused, make decisions, and keep moving forward even when your schedule gets full. You don’t need to have every detail figured out from the beginning. You just need to know what the next step is and when you’re going to take it!

  1. Celebrate the Progress Along the Way

Can we talk about how easy it is to focus on everything we HAVEN’T accomplished yet? As business owners, there’s always another goal to reach, another project to start, and another idea waiting for our attention. Sometimes we’re so focused on what’s next that we forget to celebrate how far we’ve already come.

Don’t wait until you’ve accomplished your entire goal to celebrate! Every small step forward deserves recognition.

Finished updating your website? Celebrate it! Finally organized your client workflow? That’s a win! Sent the email you’ve been putting off for three weeks? GIVE YOURSELF SOME CREDIT!

Celebrating doesn’t have to mean anything extravagant. Maybe it’s grabbing your favorite coffee, taking an afternoon off, spending time doing something you love, or simply taking a moment to recognize the work you’ve put in.

Building a business takes time, energy, and a whole lot of effort. You deserve to acknowledge the progress you’re making along the way.

And remember, progress doesn’t always look like a huge milestone. Sometimes it’s simply showing up, doing the work, and taking another step toward the business you want to build. Those little wins matter, too!

  1. Share Your Goals With Someone You Trust

Last but certainly not least, don’t be afraid to let someone else in on your goals!

Having someone who can encourage you, check in on your progress, and hold you accountable can make a HUGE difference. When you’re running your own business, it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day tasks and lose sight of the bigger picture. Having another person who knows what you’re working toward can help you stay focused and follow through.

For me, that person is Misti, my studio manager! She’s wonderful at keeping me on track and making sure I’m following through on the things I say I’m going to do. Having that extra layer of accountability helps me stay organized and keep moving forward, even when there’s a million other things happening around me.

Your accountability person might be a business bestie, a mentor, a fellow photographer, or someone on your team. The important thing is finding someone you trust who will encourage you, ask the tough questions when necessary, and celebrate your wins right alongside you.

And don’t forget that sharing your goals can open the door to valuable feedback and fresh ideas, too! Sometimes another person sees possibilities that you haven’t considered yet.

You don’t have to figure everything out on your own. Find your person, share your dreams, and let them help you make those dreams a reality!

Your Turn: What’s One Big, Bold Goal for Your Photography Business?

Now that we’ve talked about dreaming big, breaking things down, setting deadlines, celebrating progress, and finding accountability, it’s time to put these ideas into action!

Here’s your challenge: Write down ONE big, bold goal for your photography business. It can be something you’ve been dreaming about for years or an idea that just popped into your head. Whatever it is, give yourself permission to go after it.

Then, break that goal into THREE actionable steps you can take this month to start making it happen. Keep it simple, keep it realistic, and most importantly, TAKE ACTION! You don’t need to have the entire plan figured out before you begin. You just need to be willing to take that first step.

As photographers and creatives, we have so many opportunities to grow, evolve, and create businesses that reflect our passions and goals. But those dreams need a little planning and a whole lot of follow-through to become reality.

So, fellow photogs, I’m curious! What’s one big, bold goal you’re working toward in your business right now? I’d love to hear about it!

And if you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to take your business to the next level, know that you don’t have to navigate it all alone. Sometimes a little guidance, accountability, and a fresh perspective are exactly what you need to get moving again.

Keep dreaming big, keep making progress, and keep showing up for the business you’re building!
