Build Lasting Relationships and Repeat Business

Build lasting relationships & repeat business as a photographer – Sarah Jane Photography is a senior photographer based in Illinois.

You’ve worked hard to give your clients an incredible experience, so why not turn those happy clients into lifelong ones? Nurturing past clients not only helps grow your business, it also creates a community of people who genuinely love your work and keep coming back year after year. It’s incredibly important to build lasting relationships and repeat business with your clients.

Here’s how I stay connected and keep my clients in my corner long after their session is over.

1) Send regular check ins

Life moves fast, and staying top of mind is everything. While I love a handwritten note, I also like to mix it up with quick and personal video messages. A simple 30 second clip on my phone can go a long way. Something like, “Hey [Client Name], I was just scrolling through your gallery from last year and had to say hi. I hope you’re doing amazing. If you ever need updated family or branding photos, I would love to catch up and create something new with you.” Sending messages like this through Instagram DMs, email, or text keeps things personal and memorable.

2) Celebrate milestones

Graduations, anniversaries, birthdays, and even the little everyday wins are all opportunities to reconnect. I love hearing updates from my senior clients and their families, whether it is college news, new jobs, or just life updates. Those small touchpoints matter more than we think.

3) Offer exclusive perks

Give your past clients a reason to come back. Early booking access, loyalty perks, or special event invitations are simple ways to show appreciation. When clients feel valued, they are far more likely to keep coming back for every season of life.

4) Stay active on social media

Social media makes staying connected so easy. I love liking posts, commenting on updates, sharing throwbacks from their sessions, and tagging clients when I repost their images. It keeps the relationship going long after the gallery delivery and helps clients feel seen even in the small moments of everyday life.

5) Become their go to photographer

Once you are in, you are in. My senior clients often come back for family sessions, branding sessions, and milestone moments I get to document along the way. I also host limited mini sessions each year that almost always sell out with past and current clients. Staying present in their lives through these offerings makes it easy to become their photographer for every season.

My advice? Pick one past client this week and reach out. Send a quick message, share a favorite throwback image from their session, or offer a small perk for their next booking. It does not have to be big. Small gestures are often what create the strongest client relationships, trust me!
